On being a lifeguard

During highschool, I used to play water polo for my local team.

As any other 15 year old kid in high school, I was quite bored…

For that reason I decided that getting a lifeguard license could be fun. Given my background as a waterpolo player, I figured it wouldn’t be too hard, it could be fun, and cool for a summer job.

I was actually right, during our training we learnt a lot. Not only did I improve my swimming skills, but I also learned first aids and other interesting and useful stuff.

In order to get our license we had to pass certain “tests”. One of them was a theoretical exam and the others were several swimming ones. The latter ones were clearly harder than the theoretical exam.

We would have to swim 50 meters amnea. 100 meters under a given amount of time. Fast 25 meters sprints etc…

I passed all of them after the first try. Sadly, some other people from our group didn’t make it.

Overall it was a really fun process. We even went to the beach twice for training there.

For me the process of getting the lifeguard license was even more fun than actually using it. And it’s also quite useful for you to get crucial first-aid skills and improve your swimming skills.

I’d recommend everyone to do it.
