What I learned playing water polo

In a swimming pool, as long as you don’t reach the floor with your feet, you are as tall as anyone else.

That’s the main lesson water polo has taught me, and also the reason why I love this sport so much.

If you want to outplay your opponent, relying on your physique is not enough. You’ve got to work for it, and be smarter.

It’s just like in real life.

It’s also a team sport which also helps you.

Many people think that team sports are cool because it helps you learn to work with others, improve your communication and social skills etc…

That is of course true, but the way I see it, it has even more advantages:

Team sports build accountability and make your exercise patterns much more regular. That leads to a healthier life. In short, when you workout with other people, you do so more motivated and more frequently.

I’m not going to lie. Water polo is a hard sport. Just like most people think,

That’s what makes it more rewarding than most sports.

Water polo is one of the most complete sports. It’s great for your legs and stamina, you need to keep floating for a long time while swimming from one extreme to the other as fast as you can. It’s great for arms, chest and back as you can probably already deduce.

Playing water polo, beating your legs to stay above the surface and throwing the ball with all of your upper body strength, you will literally feel the tension float away from you. Over time, your mental aggression grows physically in your body, making you feel tight and uncomfortable. Intensive exercise is one of the only ways to release this tension and water polo is a great source of this exercise.

Another benefit of playing water polo is that it’s great at developing problem solving. You’ll learn strategies to break down a defence and how to play with an extra player. Water polo involves having to think on your feet and find the best scenario straight away.

Water polo also gave me confidence during my high school years, and more importantly I had so much fun. So if I were you, I’d give it a shot.
